CCPU Course

Bendigo ED has recently had our ultrasound training program accredited with the Australasian Society for Ultrasound Medicine (ASUM) for the purpose of the Certificate of Clinically Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) in the following units:

  • EFAST
  • AAA
  • Lung
  • Focused Echocardiography in Life Support (FELS)

This means that you can complete the entire CCPU in Bendigo health without the need to do an external course.

While CCPU is not necessary for emergency medicine training, completion demonstrates a recognised level of competence in POCUS, transferrable throughout Australia and New Zealand. These modules are also considered core scans for ACEM training and expected knowledge for a new FACEM.

CCPU Enrolment Process

Please refer to the ASUM website  for the most up-to-date regulations regarding CCPU enrolment, regulations are regularly updated.

In summary the process is as follows:

  • Become a member of ASUM
  • Enrol in the CCPU
  • Do the relevant course (EFAST, AAA, lung, FELS)
  • Complete case logbook, formative and summative assessments in relevant module

IMPORTAT- Please sign up with ASUM PRIOR to the course date

Courses

We hold our courses four times per year, generally in February and August for EFAST and AAA, June and November for lung and FELS.

Upcoming courses:

  • Wednesday 6th November 2024 - FELS and lung
  • February 2025 (date TBC) - EFAST and AAA
  • May 2025 (date TBC) - FELS and lung
  • August 2025 (date TBC) - EFAST and AAA
  • November 2025 (Date TBC) - FELS and lung

The courses consist of three components:

  • Online learning material and tests
  • Theoretical and practical group session
  • One-on-one scanning sessions

Learning Material

Complete the relevant online learning via the ACEM website prior to attending the course.

Fellows and trainees registered with ACEM have access to learning material through their online portfolio online portfolio.

Non-members can register for free access, see instructions here.

Once logged in, click on the ‘courses’ tab at the top of the page then ‘ultrasound’ to access the relevant modules.

You are required to complete the reading and pre-course tests for the following modules, including the pre- and post-tests prior to attending the course:

  • EFAST
  • AAA
  • Foundation thoracic/lung
  • Extended thoracic/lung
  • Foundation FELS
  • FELS Pathology and Clinical Integration

Please note, these modules are mandatory for completion of TS2 for all ACEM trainees

The Course

The course consists of both lectures and practical scanning sessions and takes place during registrar teaching on a Wednesday morning.

Example timetable are available here for the EFAST and AAA and here for the FELS and lung days.

One-on-One Scanning

ASUM set out the minimum number of hours of practical teaching per module, we cannot fit all of this into the time available for registrar teaching. Therefore to make up the required time for each module, you will need to do one-on-one scanning sessions with our sonographer educator, Karen. These are done at the bedside in ED.

This has several benefits:

  • One-on-one supervision and training, tailored to your individual needs
  • Most of our models in the course are young, healthy adults. Scanning real patients in the emergency department exposes you to a range of different body shapes and sizes
  • You are more likely to see patients with pathology

The minimum one-on-one scanning time requirements are:

  • AAA 1h
  • EFAST 1h
  • Lung 1h
  • FELS 4h

Book these sessions directly with Karen, her availability is published on FindMyShift.

Course Completion

Once you have completed the online learning, done the online tests, attended the course and done your one-on-one scanning sessions, please email me and I will provide you with your course certificate.

Logbooks and Assessments

The final part of your CCPU is completing a logbook of scans and two formative and one summative assessment per module. Details of how to complete these can be found on the ASUM website and in the relevant module syllabus.

Supervisors

You require a nominated supervisor to review your logbooks and complete your assessments. Supervisors are required as a minimum to hold a current CCPU (for at least 12 months) in the relevant module.

Current CCPU holders in Bendigo available to supervise are:

 Dr Liam Hannon

  • EFAST
  • AAA
  • Lung
  • FELS

Dr Yvette Bassin

  • EFAST
  • AAA

Dr Jeremy Wong

  • EFAST
  • Lung
  • FELS

Logbook

Logbook templates and details of how many scans/ positives can be found in the relevant course syllabus.

In Bendigo, we expect you to save your scans on the machine and complete the questionnaire report on EPR (instructions). By completing this process, the scan and your interpretation are reviewed and feedback provided. This can then be used for your logbook.

Assessments

Two formative assessments should be completed, one at the start of clinical practice, the second on later on with feedback on performance provided.

After completion of your logbook, one summative assessment is undertaken which must be satisfactorily passed.
