Weekly Teaching

We offer a high quality teaching program. This includes monthly simulation sessions, dedicated paediatric teaching (run jointly with our paediatric department), journal club, dedicated multidisciplinary trauma training.

We have an extensive ultrasound program with our own Sonogrpher Educator in the ED (SEED). We are an accredited course provider for CCPU, allowing you to complete all your courses modules in-house (EFAST, AAA, FELS, lung).

We run an annual two-day multidisciplinary trauma course, consisting of lots of short sharp lectures and simulations. Getting the opportunity to simulate managing critically injured patients with our nursing colleagues has proved hugely popular.

We regularly take training outside the classroom, recent sessions include

  • A session on envenomation, given by a local snake handler, including live specimens
  • A day with our local SES looking at extrication from a crashed car (including cutting up a car containing a 'trapped' DEMT)
  • A toxicology day, in conjunction with the Austin Hospital toxicology service

We don't do zoom, teaching is in-person, interactive and social.

A major benefit of working in a regional ED such as Bendigo is that we are the only ED in the region, meaning that you are exposed to the whole range of presentations possible in Emergency Medicine. We a regional trauma centre and our on-site helipad allows us to receive critically ill or injured patients from our region meaning you will be exposed to a range of high-acuity patients and procedures in your time with us. Our ED sees approximately 25% paediatrics, giving you great exposure to paediatric emergency medicine. Trainees generally find it very easy to compete their paediatric logbook while in Bendigo.

You will work in a very supportive environment with lots of direct FACEM supervision. We have an enthusiastic bunch of consultants with a strong focus on experience and on the floor learning.
