    Bendigo Hospital Dental Services is a 31-chair clinic providing quality emergency and general care. There is no on-call dental service at the hospital.

    Emergencies in hours:

    Monday – Friday 08:15 to 17:00

    Call 5454 7994 to speak to reception staff who can transfer you to the most senior dental clinician available

    After Hours:

    For emergencies that can be reviewed the next business day or thereafter, refer to the Bendigo Health Dental Clinic (see below)

    Referral Process:

    Patients needs to have an indication, satisfy eligibility criteria (see below) and then need to have a referral send (see below)

    For RDHM referrals:

    -Acute dental trauma + not being able to be seen locally due to weekend or public holidays

    -Severe dental pain, not requiring admission (no sepsis or airway risks) + not being able to be seen locally due to weekend or public holidays

    -patient need to be co-operative (unable to provide sedation) and willing

    Call 9341 1000 and listen to voice prompts, select 'emergencies' option

    Best to phone first to see if they can for patient in (opening hours are 8.30am-5pm weekdays and 8.30am-6pm weekends)

    Paediatrics

    Severe dental trauma or significant dental infections/facial swellings refer to the Royal Children’s Hospital

    You MUST call first and ask to speak to dental registrar on call - 9345 5522 (24/7) 

    Only patients <12 years

    Patients >12 years needs to be referred to RDHM

    In patients with special needs (e.g. Autistic) you can discuss with RCH as RDHM is unable to provide sedation (again, only if our local dental team unable to help due to complexity of trauma or public holidays)

    ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR BH DENTAL CARE

    Children:

    • 0-12 years:  eligible for free dental care, no eligibility requirements
    • 13-18 years:  eligible for free dental care with a current and valid Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card
    • Any child currently funded with available funds under the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Schedule.  Parents/care givers are typically made aware of this at the start of each calendar year by Medicare however they may contact dental reception for assistance in checking eligibility and available funds.
    • Any child currently attending a state government primary or secondary school participating in the Smile Squad program is eligible to receive free dental care.  No further eligibility requirements apply to such individuals.

    Adults:

    • Must hold a current and valid Health Care Cardor Pensioner Concession Card.
    • A range of priority patient groups are also catered to as outlined below.  Patients that fall into any of the following categories are exempt from general waitlist times with care prioritised as appropriate.

    EMERGENCY CARE AT BH DENTAL

    Patients experiencing pain or discomfort can access emergency care by calling (03) 5454 7994 from 8:15am Monday – Friday

    All patients will go through a triage process.

    Standard eligibility criteria apply.

    Treatment is provided to alleviate pain in cases of toothaches, dental swellings, broken teeth and fillings

    GENERAL DENTAL CARE AT BH

    A co-payment fee applies.

    A general waiting list applies.

    Patients are to contact the service on (03) 5454 7994 to place their name onto the general waiting list.

    CHILD ORAL HEALTH PROGRAM

    Eligibility:

    • 0-12 years:  eligible for free dental care, no eligibility requirements
    • 13-18 years:  eligible for free dental care with a current and valid Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card

    • Patient identifiers.
    • Current condition / treatment where relevant.
    • Details regarding specific dental treatment needs.
    • Concession card information - if known.
    • Medicare card details - if known.
